I do this too whenever my tires flick a stone. The problem is, I know I’m nervous about it by nature and I also know that I’m not driving something like an Allroad that’s going to implode without warning, so I tend to write it off after the initial moment of anxiety. So, the way I’m training myself, eventually there’s going to be a catastrophic failure and I’m going to completely ignore it.

i could smell burning rubber at one point too but i’m pretty sure it was coming from the 1992-ish Ranger in front of me.

I saw one of those myself the other day on the Fitchburg line. I was surprised to see a flat nose that wasn’t a control car at the beginning.

Smells after noises are the worst. I hear a stone strike then get stuck behind a 90's beater Accord, I know what both the sound and smell are but I can’t help wondering...

Both look like something from the 70s.

I drive with the windows open as often as I can and I've had so many scares from this. It's the worst when you don't see a potential culprit nearby.

There’s a Unilever plant near me that REALLY stinks whenever it’s a bit damp out. Freaked me out until I figured out what it was.

This is what they looked like when I used to ride the Commuter rail out of Lowell.

Not on the Fitchburg line! I’m not sure I believe that. Trains like that would almost bring the MBTA forward into the 20th century.

If a super modern MBTA commuter rain locomotive leaves the station at the scheduled 7:00AM time (this is obviously a hypothetical), does it still show up the MBTA customary 8 minutes late to its destination? Corollary: when the temperature is below 30 deg, is it over one hour late in showing up and 1 1/2 hours late in arriving at its destination?

none of that can be right as it implies some sort of consistency in its operation.
